ORIGINAL Cockney Rebel Steve Harley will be performing an acoustic show in St Albans this weekend.

NO 70s night worth its salt would be complete without hearing the opening refrain from Make Me Smile (Come Up and See Me) at least once.

The single, by Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel, topped the UK chart for two weeks in 1975 and has been covered more than 100 times since in seven languages.

It has also featured in several movies, including male stripper story The Full Monty, and used on more than 20 TV and radio advertising campaigns around the world.

Nearly 40 years after is release, the Performing Rights Society has confirmed Make Me Smile as one of the most played records in British broadcasting.

And the original Cockney Rebel, former journalist Steve Harley, will be in concert at the Alban Arena this weekend.

After a massively successful tour with a full rock band last spring, and sets at both the Isle of Wight and Glastonbury festivals, the pace will ease back slightly on Saturday night.

It will be a stripped down, three-man acoustic affair at the St Albans venue.

The set will be built around all-time favourites such as debut Cockney Rebel hit Judy Teen, follow-up top 10 smash Mr Soft and, of course, the ever-popular Make Me Smile’ (Come Up And See Me), all blended in with more recent tracks from critically-acclaimed solo albums The Quality Of Mercy and Stranger Comes To Town.

Londoner Harley said: “Playing the songs in an acoustic format gives me time and space to enjoy every second.

“And we improvise, which is always a big excitement for any musician.

“We can loosen off the arrangements and really explore. It gets pretty exciting during the acoustic sets.”

Just don’t expect such a venomous cry of ‘You’ve done it all, you’ve broken every code’ on Saturday. After all, it is an acoustic set.

Tickets cost £23.50 and are available from the box office on 01727 844488 or book online at www.alban-arena.co.uk
