HILARIOUS, heartbreaking and heart-warming is how the forthcoming play of Knebworth Amateur Theatrical Society (KATS) is described.
We Happy Few by Imogen Stubbs is on at Knebworth Village Hall in Park Lane, from tonight (Thursday).
It’s the start of World War Two and Hetty Oak is so “damned bored and restless” she is inspired to put together an all-women acting company – the Artemis Players.
Aiming to take “Shakespeare to people throughout Britain who have no access whatsoever to our great culture”, Miss Oak has four weeks to prove to the ministry that this is a war effort worth ploughing money into.
What follows is an adventure which is in turn, according to KATS, is “hilarious, heart-breaking and heartwarming”.
Co-director Chris Simson said: “The play is based on the real-life story of the Osiris Players.
“It’s been a rollercoaster ride – with events offstage mirroring the on-stage crises.”
He added: “This promises to be a splendid evening of theatre for anyone who likes Shakespeare, comedy, romance or World War Two plays.”
Doors open at 7.15pm.
The play, which runs until Saturday, begins at 7.45pm.
Tickets cost £6.50; concessions get £1 off that price.
