SMOKE machines activated the fire alarms, evacuating the crowd from Chase and Status’ Hatfield gig last night (Wednesday).
A couple of thousand people were cleared from The Forum Hertfordshire on two occasions, prompting a response from Hatfield’s fire crew.
One gigger at the University of Hertfordshire venue said: “The only Flashing Lights here are those of the Herts Fire And Rescue Service.”
The alarms were activated at approximately 8pm and then again half an hour later, before Chase and Status or their support act – Delilah – had appeared.
Dale Murphy, head of security services at the College Lane uni, said: “The University of Hertfordshire puts an extremely high emphasis on the safety of its students and as the fire alarm was triggered, evacuations were carried out as a precautionary measure. The incident was resolved quickly with the help of both the Students’ Union and the bands.”

The alarms actually went off at around 7.30pm and we were not allowed back in until after 9pm. I understand that if there HAD been a fire then they had to get everyone out, but there was no explanation given and no updates so what resulted was a lot of people standing around in the cold (most peoples coats were in the cloakroom) and no one being told what was going on. Luckily once we were allowed back in, Chase & Status started straight away and played an amazing gig.
