The 21-year-old from Welwyn Garden City finished one shot away from making the weekend rounds of the event in the United Arab Emirates.

Lewis’ first round of three-over par 75 left him with work to do on the second day.

Despite shooting a par 72 second round he was left three-over with the cut made at two-under, Lewis finished tied 70th.

Leading at the mid-way point of the competition was Denmark’s Thorbjørn Olesen on seven-under par.

The field was said to be the strongest ever assembled for the Championship with six of the world’s top 10 players competing.
