TOM Lewis has a real chance of making the European team for the 2011 Ryder Cup in September, according to the triumphant 2010 European Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie.
The 21-year-old from Welwyn Garden City partnered Montgomerie on the first day of the Volvo Golf Champions 2012 tournament in South Africa yesterday (Thursday).
The Scot was clearly impressed with Lewis’ display, the former Monk’s Walk School pupil was tied third following the opening day at Fancourt with a five-under par round of 68.
Montgomerie belives Lewis could be in with a shout of making the 2011 Ryder Cup team skippered by Jose Maria Olazabal.
He said: “He [Lewis] has every opportunity to make you-know-what come September.”
Following the second day of the Volvo Golf Champions 2012 tournament, Lewis ended tied 15th with a round of 74.
The Herts ace started slowly earlier today [Thursday] by bogeying three of the first five holes.
Birdies on the 7th, 13th and 16th were bright spots as he dropped down the leaderboard, but he is tied 14th with The Open Championship 2011 winner Darren Clarke.
