Welwyn Garden City ladies continued their good form with a 6-1 win against Hertford in the 5 Counties Women’s Hockey League Premier Division.

The Herts Sports Village-based side dominated the game from the start and but from some fine goalkeeping the score could have been a lot more.

Shannon Tella was the first to score as her speed took her round the Hertford defenders to leave a clear shot.

Then it was the turn of top scorer Trinny McCann to get in on the act as she fired into the top right hand corner giving the Hertford keeper no chance.

Ellie Bonnett made it three just before half time as she pounced on a rebound off the keeper’s pads after Abbie Woodman had swept a Marie Davis cross goal ward.

Hertford came out for the second half a bit more organised and they managed to snatch a goal back from a well-worked corner routine giving Erica Stovold no chance to save.

But this was a minor setback as the Welwyn girls got straight back on the attack at the restart and McCann was soon on the score sheet again as she met a cross from Tella, whose speed down the right wing was proving too much to handle.

Lizzie Owen made it five as her shot was deflected into the far corner and McCann had an opportunity to register a hat-trick when a penalty was awarded after a defender caught an Annabel Mabin flick on the line.

However, McCann was denied by an excellent save.

But the sixth did eventually come as player-coach Harriet Anderson-Bradley finished off the day, firing in from a penalty corner.

This result moved Welwyn four points clear at the top of the table as second-placed Leighton Buzzard only managed a draw.

There were some good results elsewhere too for the Welwyn ladies teams.

The 2nds drew 2-2 with St Neots thanks to goals from Danine Irwin and Amy Hicks and the 3rds beat Milton Keynes 3-1 with Lucy Owen, Hannah Morgan and Sara Hassan on target.

And a hat-trick from Carli Johnson helped the 4th team to a 5-3 win over Letchworth. Alisa Hassan got the other two.
