Archant

A four-try bonus point was scant reward for Welwyn Rugby Club as they went down to a 39-29 defeat away to Grasshoppers.

Phil Grehan got two of them with Harry Gillespie and Rory Harcourt the others as Welwyn remain second in London North West Three but now seven points behind leaders Verulamians.

Harcourt also landed three conversions and a penalty but Welwyn could have got a second bonus point and maybe more after a stirring fightback in the last 10 minutes.

Having turned round 15-12 in front, Welwyn conceded three tries at regular intervals in the second half to trail 34-15 with 10 minutes to go.

Two converted cores got them close but just when it seemed they would go on and win it, Grasshoppers grabbed a further score to kill the game off.

They have a break this week before resuming league action on October 21 at home to Stevenage Town.
