The result means Welwyn have closed to within one point of Worcester at the top of the RFUW Central League, with a game in hand.

Welwyn, sponsored by JCA Group, ran in 15 unopposed tries, with seven different try scorers.

The Oxford girls deserved credit for sticking at their task without letting their heads go down, managing to get close to scoring in the last few minutes.

Captain and fly half, Zoe Harrison, scored five tries and six conversions, showing strong running through the centre and making some decisive calls.

Ellena Perry, Hannah Botterman, Beth Summerfield and Sara Blissett added two tries each, while Molly Stagg and Florence Jones scored their first tries for Welwyn. Saph Bennett also scored three conversions.

Welwyn Under-15s manager, Colin Summerfield, said: “The girls did well to retain their shape and discipline when it would have been easy to get carried away; it was especially rewarding to see a couple of the new girls get onto the scoresheet.”

The result leaves the league still finely poised with four teams still in the running to win it. Welwyn have four games remaining, including next week’s return home match against Berks Baa-Baas; the first was a narrow victory for Welwyn.
