A ladies rugby union side is on the lookout for even more players despite having grown so much in just a short space of time.

Cuffley Ladies started in the summer of 2015 with a group of eight. Now they are up to 30.

But with one eye on putting out a second team they are doing anything but resting on their laurels.

Nicola Green said: “The club run mixed touch rugby sessions every summer with the men’s team encouraging their partners and friends to join these sessions.

“We wanted to continue playing touch rugby through the winter too and one thing led to another and we were soon training in full contact rugby and played our first competitive game with a squad of 12.

“All the ladies loved this game and decided to focus on growing the team and playing friendly matches in order to gain a position in a league.”

That was achieved after the first 12 months and a great first year saw them win the league with just two defeats.

Green said: “The team is going from strength to strength with the age of the players ranging from 18-year-old upwards.

“There are varying levels of experience and backgrounds. Our ladies aren’t just local to Cuffley but come from Hertford, St Albans and Welwyn Garden City too.

“Anyone and everyone is welcome at Cuffley.”

Green says the support from the club as a whole has been a key ingredient in helping with their success, along with the work from their “dedicated coaching team”.

And she says that welcoming atmosphere would be afforded to any newcomer.

She said: “We currently train on Tuesday evenings from 7.15pm in St Albans or Hertford but are excited to be moving training sessions to Thursday nights at the new RFU APG pitch at Rosedale Sport Club, Cheshunt for the coming season.

“Details of training sessions will be updated on our website and social media.

“We are also hosting an Inner Warrior Day in April for any ladies over 18 who wish to give rugby a go, dust off their boots and return to the game or join a new team.”
