Tennis legend Billie Jean King was quick to congratulate a Hertfordshire school after a historic win.

The winner of 12 grand-slam singles titles, including six Wimbledon successes,
tweeted after Queenswood School took the victory in the National Team Tennis Championships.

She tweeted “Good Luck! Keep dreaming big and go for it” before the win, adding “Congratulations champions” after.

The competition started in April with 2,500 schools across the country entering and Queenswood had to battle through county and regional rounds to reach the finals.

There the squad of Maia Mountain, Jess Matthews, Issey Purser, Imogen Haddad and Given Roach saw off Bournemouth’s Talbot Heath 4-2 to clinch the trophy.

Catherine Sluter, director of tennis, said: “I am so proud of the team spirit we showed on the court. Beating such fierce opposition is no mean feat.”
