The 25-year-old Formula 1 star from Herts qualified fifth in Budapest behind the flying Red Bulls and resurgent Ferrari drivers.

Sebastian Vettel will once again start from pole position ahead of Red Bull rival Mark Webber in another front row lock-out for the team.

Ferrari have the second row to themselves with Fernando Alonso, controversial winner of the German Grand Prix, third alongside Felipe Massa in fourth spot.

Hamilton was more than a second-and-half slower than pole-sitter Vettel and will start on the thIrd row with Mercedes’ Nico Rosberg alongside him.

On completing qualifying, the McLaren pit told Hamilton: “You got everything out of the car. P5 is a great place to start from tomorrow.”

The Tewin F1 hero, winner in Hungary last year, said: “I’m happy with today’s result.

“I was relieved to get into Q3 – it was very close – and I feel I pulled every last drop out of the car. So I’m satisfied with the job we did today [Saturday].”

Hamilton’s McLaren Mercedes team-mate Jenson Button failed to make the top 10 shoot-out in qualifying and will line-up 11th for the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Martin Whitmarsh, the team principal of Vodafone McLaren Mercedes, praised his 2008 world champion for qualifying in the top six with a car clearly not as quick as Red Bull and Ferrari.

He said: “Lewis did a fantastic job to qualify immediately behind the Red Bulls and the Ferraris – and, in fact, had he not lost a little time on the second sector of his best lap, it’s just possible that he may even have been able to pip Felipe [Massa] for fourth.”

The 2010 Hungarian Grand Prix starts at 1pm.
