An unbelievable backs-to-the-wall performance at Hoddesdon Town brought a 1-0 win for the once again undefeated Welwyn Garden City.

The Citizens only defeat this year, a 1-0 reverse to Biggleswade FC, was scratched from the records last week by the Spartan South Midlands League following the playing of a suspended player by the Bedfordshire side.

And a goal inside the last 20 minutes by top-scorer Jon Clements ensured City would stay three points behind leaders Berkhamsted with now three games in hand.

That victory seemed a distant hope after just eight minutes when Sam Marks was sent off.

But WGC kept battling throughout and got their reward with Clements’s 22nd goal of the season.

They finish off 2017 on Saturday with a home game against the team sitting directly above them in the Premier Division, Harpenden Town.
