SACKED Hatfield Town manager Darryn Stewart has told the Welwyn Hatfield Times of his shock and disappointment after he was axed by the SSML Premier Division Club.
Chairman Chris Maloney revealed this morning that Stewart had left the club, and now the deposed boss has spoken out on the situation.
“I think it’s a diabolical decision, to be honest, it’s absolutely stupid and I am proper shocked,” he said.
“I didn’t walk away; I’ve been at Hatfield for 10 years, and I would never walk away, I feel I’ve been really harshly treated.
“I think I’ve definitely been made the scapegoat for the situation the team is in; I’m hurt, gutted and disappointed, it’s a really bad decision.”
The Blueboys currently sit second-bottom of the SSML Premier Division, and are scheduled to entertain fellow strugglers Biggleswade United on Saturday. They go into that game after a disappointing 4-2 defeat to Holmer Green on Tuesday night.
But Stewart felt he was fully capable of guiding the team to safety.
“Every player has spoke to me or text me saying how shocked they are.
“If at the end of the season, things didn’t work out then yes, I would hold my hands up and accept the blame, but I haven’t been given the opportunity to finish the job I started.
“When I took over we had nothing, I have helped build a team with Kev (Pearman, joint-manager) so to be sacked is hurtful.
“I’m a good manager, good with people and feel I have been betrayed, but there’s no going back.”
Despite his sacking, Stewart says he will continue to support the team and wishes the best for all concerned.
“I want Hatfield to win that game on Saturday, I will be cheering them on and want only the best for the team.
“I have the utmost respect for all the players, they’re all terrific and really want them to get out of the situation the team is in.”
Kev Pearman, who was joint-manager with Stewart, will remain on the coaching team, as will Gary Ansell.
Hatfield’s game against Biggleswade United will take place at Top Field, home of Hitchin Town FC.
