Frank Warren has slammed the Massachusetts State Athletic Commission (MSAC) after Billy Joe Saunders vacated the WBO world middleweight title.

The Hatfield boxer was denied a licence to defend his title in Boston on Saturday following an “adverse finding” in a test carried out by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association.

In a statement Warren said: “I have read comments that MSAC had no choice as a failed test is a failed test however these comments are, with respect, misleading and ignorant of the fact that MSAC apply the WADA code.

“It was for MSAC to apply the WADA code to the results which they failed to do.

“To be clear Billy Joe undertook four WADA tests leading up to the fight, all of which were clear.

“MSAC have simply got this wrong and cost Billy Joe his opportunity to defend his title.”

Demetrius Andrade, who Saunders was set to fight, will now face Walter Kautondokwa for the vacant title.
