Billy Joe Saunders secures brutal KO victory at Liverpool’s Echo Arena

HATFIELD boxer Billy Joe Saunders continued his remarkable progression with a brutal first round knockout of Hungarian Norbert Szekeres on Saturday night.

The clash formed part of the undercard for Nathan Cleverly’s successful WBO light heavyweight title defence against home favourite Tony Bellew at the Liverpool Echo Arena.

Saunders now meets Gary Boulden next month in the rearranged Southern Area middleweight title clash which was scheduled for last June.

“I didn’t mean to go in there and stop him in the first round really, but I’ve got Gary Boulden in three weeks, I’m trying to save stuff,” Saunders said to Box Nation following his impressive victory.

“I knew I’d eventually wear him down by putting stuff together. I hit him with a good shot.”

Also on the show, Billy Joe’s fellow ‘Olympian’ James Degale defeated Piotr Wilczewski on points to become the new EBU European Super Middleweight champion.
