The WGC sprinter is a London 2012 Olympic Games hopeful and has enjoyed one of the fastest rises up the British rankings in recent years, claiming European Junior 100m and 200m gold last year.

But so far in 2012 the 18-year-old has had to settle for second best, with Asha Philip pipping her to gold at last month’s London Games at Lee Valley.

And this weekend it was Jeanette Kwakye’s turn to frustrate the Herts Phoenix ace as she took the 60m title at the Indoor Trials & UK Championships with a stadium record 7.20 seconds, nine-hundredths-of-a-second ahead of Williams in second.

With both sprinters inside the qualifying time for March’s World Indoor Championships in Turkey, and Philip’s season best of 7.24 secs despite being disqualified in her semi in Sheffield, Williams’ future is far from determined.

And with bronze-medal winner Laura Turner having also run a season’s best 7.29 seconds earlier this year, Williams has a fight on her hands for a plane ticket to Turkey with just two spots available and Kwakye having wrapped one up with her Steel City performance.

But despite this intense competition Williams, who finished fourth in the 60m at last year’s European Indoor Championships, couldn’t be happier at this stage of her season.

“I haven’t really been right so far this season so I’m really happy with winning silver in Sheffield, it was absolutely brilliant,” she said.

“Hopefully it will be enough to get me on the plane, but we’ll see because there are some very fast girls to contend with.

“I’ve been doing quite a lot of different stuff this year so it probably explains why I haven’t been right this season, but I’m happy with how things are going.

“I’ve been doing a lot of heavy stuff during training and concentrating on improving a lot of my weaknesses like my legs and stuff so I’ve started doing weights and it’s going well.

“But I am getting things right now and working hard and hopefully it will be in time to make it to Turkey.”

Also in action in Sheffield were Herts athletes Moe Sasegbon, who finished ninth in the women’s high jump, and Laura Wake who bowed out of the 400m at the semi-final stage.

And despite her premature exit Herts Pheonix starlet Wake insists her journey north was far from a wasted one as she looks to bow out of the junior competition in style.

“I’ve got my eye on the Under-23s next year as it’s my last year as a junior so to speak so at the moment I’m really thinking about that and anything else is just a bonus,” the 20-year-old said.
