Potters Bar Town's pre-season continues to gather pace with another friendly, another signing, a new coach and a major youth announcement.

The signing came first, left back Tommy Cooney arriving at the Lantern Stadium.

The 27-year-old started with Brentford but has had a varied career, with stops at Braintree Town, Bognor Regis Town, Margate and Hornchurch among other places.

He has also played in Finland, Sweden and Australia and was most recently at Faversham Town in the early part of last season.

An emphatic second half saw the Scholars pick up their first win of pre-season, away to Cockfosters.

Two goals from a trialist, a header from Leigh Rose and an own goal saw them win 4-0 at Chalk Lane.

Manager Max Mitchell followed that by beefing up his coaching support, bringing in former Hitchin Town midfielder Michael Noone.

The former Canary has had a spell away from the game but arrives with knowledge gained from the USA and Australia as well as the UK.

The Bar boss said: "I'm delighted. I’ve known him for a long time, he has a great understanding of the game and wants to develop his coaching over the next few years.

"Having been out of the game for a while, it’s great to see the impact he’s already having around the group as well as rediscovering his passion for the game on the other side of the fence.

"He’s the exact personality we want around the group and will play a big part in proceedings moving forwards."

The final announcement from the Isthmian League side was with regards to their development side.

They have partnered with Pro Direct Academy East London to form a team that will play under the Potters Bar Town name next term.

They will also represent the club in the FA Youth Cup, the draw for which has given the Scholars an away game at Barkingside in the preliminary round, the match scheduled for the week commencing Monday, September 4.

A statement on the website said: "The development side will provide a clear route to the first team, as well as providing strength in depth for Bar in the future."

Bar's next pre-season friendly is at home to a young Stevenage side tonight (Tuesday), kick-off at 7.45pm.
