Potters Bar Town gave their long-suffering fans something to cheer about with a comprehensive display and victory in their final home game of the season against Carshalton Athletic.

The Scholars have endured a difficult second half of the Isthmian League Premier Division season, slipping from the top of the table in October down to 15th before the south Londoners arrived at the Lantern Stadium.

However, three goals in the first period meant that this would be a much happier day for Max Mitchell's men who ran out 3-1 winners.

Samuel Dowridge got the first two with Lewis Smith bagging the third.

And the new boss was pleased with the performance as well as being chuffed for his squad and the behind-the-scenes staff.

Speaking on Twitter, Mitchell said: "Big thanks to all at Potters Bar for their relentless work off the pitch for the players this season.

"The players were excellent, covered off the basics well and we got our just rewards."

After the game, the club held their presentation evening with Finlay Titchmarsh winning both the supporters' player of the season and the manager's player.

Welwyn Garden City's final home game of the season was also meant to be on Saturday but their Southern League Division One Central clash with Kidlington was called off due to the persistent rain on Friday evening.

However, with the league also ending this week, the Citizens rearranged it quickly to be played on Tuesday evening.

They go to Biggleswade Town on Saturday.

Welwyn will be looking to challenge at the top end of the table again next season but should they find themselves struggling, they will be in more danger of relegation than they would be this year.

The current rules say that only the bottom two in each division at the level will be relegated automatically, with the sides finishing third and fourth bottom going into a play-off game with a team who finished second in one of the step five leagues, the likes of the Spartan South Midlands and Essex Senior.

However, the FA are planning to scrap that and change it to the bottom four going down.

This will then guarantee a second promotion spot for clubs at step five, that going to the winner of a traditional four-team play-off system as seen throughout the pyramid.

The statement from the FA said: "These changes reflect a long-term aim to create consistency at each level."
