A Welwyn Garden City man has been fined after blaming a misty windscreen for a crash which resulted in his and another car being written off.

Ryan Smith, 26, of Peartree Court, had been driving a Vauxhall Zafira when he crashed into a parked car in Woolmer Green on October 3 last year.

The court heard how the Zafira had been driven on Mardleybury Road without due care and attention.

Smith turned from London Road, crashing into another Zafira that was parked and unattended.

His explanation for the crash was that his windscreen had misted up while he was driving and he was adjusting the heater temperature when he collided with the other vehicle.

Smith suffered slight injury to his chest.

Both vehicles were extensively damaged and assessed as total losses.

Smith did not appear at Stevenage Magistrates’ Court when his case was heard on April 12.

It was subsequently proved in his absence that he had driven without due care and attention.

Smith was fined £440.

He was ordered to pay victim services £44 and £85 costs.

Six penalty points were issued.
