OLYMPIC silver medallist Mark Richardson was among those celebrating sporting achievement and dedication at the Welwyn Hatfield Borough Sports Awards last night (Thursday).

Club of the Year-WGC Boxing Club
School Team of the Year-Stanborough School’s senior girls’ tennis team
Team of the Year-Hatfield Swimming Club’s boys’ relay team
Young Leader of the Year-Shelly Harris
School Pupil of the Year-David Griffin
Outstanding Contribution to Community Sport: Dave Bartlett
The glittering event at Campus West, Welwyn Garden City, began with 20 Queen’s Golden Jubilee Awards handed to talented young people, the grants are to help and encourage them to reach their full potential in their chosen fields.
Eleven of the evening’s sport awards were then presented to successful nominees, see right for the winners.
Former GB 400m athlete Mark Richardson enthralled the crowd with inspirational stories about his time as an elite athlete and heightened the anticipation for this summer’s Olympic Games in London.
The final presentation of the evening saw the Olympic and Paralympic Value awards given to deserving winners: courage (Buster Martin), determination (St Philip Howard School netball team), equality (Stuart Bowman), excellence (Alannah and Sophie Mabbs), friendship (Becky Duff), inspiration (Sarah Miller) and respect (Russell Kane).
The entertainment on the night was provided by the Taiko Drummers, Georgia Sheed and Samantha Grint.
