A DRAMATIC snow rescue drill was carried out by fire crews from Welwyn Garden City and other parts of Hertfordshire.
The simulation featured a road traffic collision involving six cars and a motorcycle.
The realistic training exercise was provided courtesy of B & T Salvage in Birchall Lane, a breakers yard and repair service.
During two hours of realistic training designed to mimic the hazards associated with travelling during winter conditions, the crews had an opportunity to practise and perfect their rescue techniques and trauma care.
Station Commander for Welwyn Garden City, Rad Bristow, said: “This was a realistic training opportunity that provided crews with a challenging simulation and an opportunity to practise the skills and techniques required to perform an effective rescue.
“It was pertinent that we carried out this exercise at this time of year as we are all too often called out to road accidents where drivers haven’t taken the change in road conditions into consideration. I’d urge everyone to think about the effects of the weather and poor visibility when driving.”
Richard Thake, cabinet member for community safety, said: “It’s essential that firefighters are able to practise their techniques for stabilising vehicles and safely rescuing people who have become trapped during a collision.
“Our crews are certainly ready to deal with any accidents, but hopefully their training won’t need to be put into practice. Please take care when driving in cold conditions.”
