Welwyn Hatfield MP Grant Shapps launched an outspoken attack on his own party’s General Election campaign on national radio this morning.

Mr Shapps, who as co-party chairman took a leading role in the successful Conservative campaign of 2015, was interviewed about the contrasting result this month on BBC Radio Four’s Today Programme.

He told listeners: “We were 20 points ahead and suddenly, in the space of two or three weeks, we lost that. And that wasn’t down to people suddenly changing their minds on austerity, which none of us have ever liked.

“It was because we had forgotten the lessons of previous election campaigns,”

He described the Conservative manifesto as “a long list of punishments for the public and our core supporters”.

With its overall parliamentary majority lost, the Conservative Party has been forced into a controversial alliance with the Democratic Unionist Party.
