A Welwyn Garden City woman is taking on the trek of her life in memory of her best friend, her dad.

Emma Cook and her dad. Emma Cook and her dad.

Emma Cook, 23, of Cole Green Lane, will be flying out on October 14 to China for nine days to tackle a trek organised by WGC-based Isabel Hospice.

The adventure will take the Gubeikou to Simatai route, which features views of the Great Wall of China and the surrounding rolling hills.

Emma’s dad Steve Cook, who was an engineer, was diagnosed with a cancerous brain tumour in 2008 and for two years battled through his chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

Emma, who is a Dior makeup artist, said: “Just before Christmas in 2009 my dad went to the Isabel Hospice, and that’s where he spent his last 13 days before he passed away.

“The hospice cared for my dad and they supported my mum Lynn, and my sister Laura, and I, through this terrible time.”

On January 2, 2010, Emma’s dad died at the age of just 51.

In 2011 when she was 17, Emma sky-dived in memory of her dad, and then walked on fire in 2015 to raise money for Isabel Hospice.

Emma said: “When this trek came up in China, I couldn’t resist the challenge.

“My dad was loved by many and still is now, seven years on he is extremely missed. He was one in a million.

“He was my dad but also my inspiration and my best friend.”

Emma added: “I am definitely not the fittest of sportiest person and this challenge is completely out of my comfort zone and will test me to the limit.

“I can not stress enough that every pound helps. Whatever you can spare I will be extremely grateful and will make a difference to improve someone’s life.”
