A Welwyn Garden City man has been shortlisted for a national award after raising over £88k for his friend, who suffered a life-changing accident.

Alex Jendi started fundraising after his mate Gerard Murphy, also from WGC, dived into a lake and misjudged its depth, hitting his head on the rocky bottom and leaving him paralysed from the neck down.

The WGC youngster told the WHT: “I set up the JustGiving page to help pay for all the things he will need in the future. This could be a wheelchair, adjustments to his accommodation, technology or anything else.”

The page was set up around October last year, and to date has raised £88,688.

As a result, Alex has been named as a finalist in the annual JustGiving Awards – an evening designed to celebrate and congratulate outstanding people.
