A number of proposals have been put forward to mark Welwyn Garden City’s milestone anniversary, including a lasting feature in the heart of the town centre.
As 2020 swiftly approaches, preparations for Welwyn Garden City’s 100th anniversary celebrations are well underway.
Last week, the Welwyn Garden City Centenary Foundation hosted a public meeting at the Focolare centre to share what progress had been made in the build up to the centenary year.
Attended by more than 70 people representing a wide variety of local organisations, a number of proposals were discussed, including the following.
•A show garden at the Chelsea Flower Show – celebrating the heritage of WGC and the garden city movement
•A proper ‘Garden City’ welcome – updated signs to greets visitors to the town
•Book-end events: - celebrations at the start and close of 2020 including a firework display
•Centenary walk - a proposed 12km walk which will circle the Garden City
•A lasting feature in the town
A Centenary Foundation spokeswoman said: “Multiple avenues are being explored as to how best commemorate the centenary.
“However a large consensus is that a lasting feature, along a similar vein to the Coronation fountain located in the heart of the town centre, would be an appropriate way to mark the occasion.
“There are many more enthralling ideas and numerous opportunities for the public to get involved, and the more support and help on board, the better it will eventually turn out to be in 2020.”
