The Woolmer Green Queen Elizabeth II orchard and wild garden is being created next to the village hall in Hall Road, as part of the legacy for the Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

Year five and six pupils from St Michael’s Woolmer Green School got their hands dirty for the cause, planting 28 apple and pear trees.

Acting headteacher Brendan Mallon said: “It was a very good day, the children thoroughly enjoyed it and we’re looking forward to seeing the fruits of our labour in five years.

The new attraction is being funded by Woolmer Green Parish Council, through a £2,500 grant from the Queen Elizabeth II Fields Challenge.

The challenge aims to protect 2,012 outdoor recreational spaces by the end of the year to build a legacy from both the Jubilee and Lonodon Olympics.
