“IS the UK still a sovereign country?”

That was the question posed by Janis Sharp, mother of UFO hacker Gary McKinnon, as it emerged cross-party grandees had written a “begging” letter to US Presidential hopeful Mitt Romney.

Ms Sharp, who lives in Brookmans Park, said the letter, backed by ex-Lib Dem chief Sir Menzies Campbell, Labour chairman of the home affairs select committee Keith Vaz and Tory backbencher Dominic Raab was “a tad embarrassing”.

It asked whether, if Mr Romney unseats Barack Obama, he would consider a review of the UK-US extradition treaty, as agreed by President Obama in talks with PM David Cameron.

“If you are President, would you be willing to do the same,” the letter asked.

It then implored Republican candidate Mr Romney: “Would you be willing to look sympathetically at such changes?

“They would be enormously appreciated by those in my country who want to see the special relationship go from strength to strength.”

Ms Sharp told the WHT: “It’s a tad embarrassing that we seem to be on our knees before Mr Romney is in power, begging for him to consider it.”

She added: “Is the UK still a sovereign country?

“Or when we were sleeping, did we become merely an outpost owned by the US?

“I hope we are still a sovereign nation capable of protecting our own citizens.”
