The A1(M) remains closed northbound this morning after a serious crash near Welwyn – and police have now launched an appeal for information.

The incident occurred on the northbound carriageway, near junction 6, at about 7.15am, and the road is closed between Junction 6 for Stevenage and 7 for Welwyn.

Three ambulance crews, two ambulance officers and the East Anglian Air Ambulance were sent to the scene.

A police spokeswoman said: “For reasons unknown at this stage, a Nissan Juke left the carriageway and collided with some trees.

“The air ambulance attended and both occupants of the vehicle have been taken to hospital.”

Officers are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident, or thinks they may have seen the vehicle prior to it, to contact the Road Policing Unit via the non-emergency number 101, quoting ISR 169 of September 2.
