Welwyn Hatfield Council is awaiting welfare checks to be carried out before taking further action after travellers set up home in a council-owned car park yesterday.

A Welwyn Hatfield Council spokeswoman said: “We were notified yesterday evening (Wednesday, December 20) that an unauthorised encampment has arrived in the car park off Digswell Park Road.

“Council officers have visited the site and confirmed the presence of three caravans, a transit van and one truck.

“This land is owned by the borough council and we have requested welfare checks to be completed as part of the legal process before taking further action.

“We are continuing to monitor the situation closely.”

Travellers have also set up home in a layby on Marford Road near the Crooked Chimney pub and Brocket Hall.

Caravans have been there for several days.
