A young woman has been given a community order after trying to steal nearly £6,000 worth of John Lewis gift cards in Welwyn Garden City over the course of about 11 months.

Sianne Dunstan, 18, admitted attempting to steal £5,889.98 worth of gift cards from John Lewis between November 26 in 2016 and October 28 in 2017.

Dunstan appeared at St Albans Magistrates’ Court on March 6.

She was given a community order and must carry out 80 hours of unpaid work.

Dunstan, of Hardy Close, Hitchin, was ordered to pay compensation of £5,889.98.

She must also pay victim services £85 and £85 court costs.

Magistrates took into account her guilty plea when imposing the sentence.
