Potters Bar people raise a cuppa and lots of cash for Macmillan

THE people of Potters Bar showed their charitable spirit in a record-breaking day for the community.

The town managed to bank more than £7,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support during the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning on Friday in conjunction with similar events up and down the country.

The Darkes Lane branch of Barclays bank hosted the morning with a whole host of Potters Bar businesses also getting involved for the day.

The morning included a raffle, sales of food and drink and plenty of donation pots on hand for people to put their money towards the worthy cause.

Fundraisers collected £3,500 in gorgeous late September sunshine and Barclays kept to its word and doubled whatever the town of Potters Bar could muster.

Hertsmere mayor Peter Knell had previously hailed the day as “the biggest in Potters Bar in the last decade” and he was delighted with the outcome.

He said: “It was a great day, a really great day.

“The people of Potters Bar came together and really showed what we as a community can do, it was really wonderful.

“I believe it is a record amount of money the town has ever raised, surpassing anything even the Potters Bar Carnival has ever done.”

Businesses such as Hob Salons, Kaos and Readers Butchers were among those who also made the effort to show their support.

Staff at Barclays dressed in green, the adopted colour of the charity. Tracey Edwards, Barclays branch manager at Darkes Lane, said: “It was the proudest day of my career.

“My staff, my customers and my fellow business colleagues together with the mayor of Hertsmere all pulled together to make the Macmillan coffee morning a huge success.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their generosity.”

The winners of the morning’s raffle have yet to be notified and at the time of going to press, Potters Bar’s donation had helped towards a nationwide effort of £521,980.
