Potters Bar’s MP has pledged his support to Prime Minister Theresa May after reports that a list of around 30 Tory MPs want her to be ousted.

News broke this morning that Welwyn Hatfield MP Grant Shapps had been involved in gathering names of MPs who wanted Mrs May to step down following a turbulent few months for the Conservatives.

However, Hertsmere MP Oliver Dowden today said: “At a time when the country faces the difficult and complex challenge of negotiating our exit from the European Union, I think people expect their MPs to unite behind the Prime Minister, support her and focus on the job in hand.

“She has my complete support.”

It follows Mr Shapps saying in a BBC interview that the list of dissenting MPs is growing, although none are currently in the Cabinet, and claiming it is “probably the time to have a leadership election”.
