Potters Bar MP Oliver Dowden has supported the US missile strikes on a Syrian air base, condemning Bashar al-Assad as a brutal dictator.

President Donald Trump ordered the launch of 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles against the Shayrat air base, blaming Mr al-Assad for the death of at least 80 civilians from poison gas.

Mr Dowden, Conservative MP for Hertsmere, said: “I support these air strikes. The world must not stand by when chemical weapons are used by a brutal dictatorship against its own people.

“Syrian aggression, ultimately backed by Russia, is profoundly destabilising for the Middle East.

“The United States previously said the use of chemical weapons was a red line, but when they were used in 2013, Britain and America failed to act.

“This inaction had a consequence – the Syrian regime felt freer to act with more brutality and Russia felt free to support them.

“The response from President Trump indicates a determination not to allow this to happen again. Of course we must be careful not to get drawn into another country’s civil war, but I believe that this limited and proportionate response strikes the right balance.”
