Police were called by concerned residents after a picture of a baby left outside shops in Welwyn Garden City circulated on social media.

Police were called at 1.48pm yesterday (Sunday, October 21) by a member of the public reporting that they had seen a picture on Facebook showing a baby in a pushchair and a dog tied to a tree outside Panshanger shops.

The police spokeswoman said: “The caller had only seen this on Facebook and not in person.

“An officer attended the area and there was no baby and pushchair in the area.”

Residents voiced their worries on the picture with many saying it was “shocking”.

Another said: “Before the 1980s everyone left the baby outside the shop in the pram.

“It was safe to in those days so there were rows of prams outside shops. Sad times now.”
