A number of police and the bomb squad dealt with an incident at Welwyn Garden City’s YMCA yesterday, resulting in two arrests.

A Herts Police spokeswoman said: “Police were called to the YMCA in Peartree Lane, Welwyn Garden City at 2.11pm on October 29 to reports of an improvised firework having been found in a room.

“Officers attended and two men aged 19 years old and who are from Welwyn Garden City were arrested on suspicion of possession of items to endanger life.

“EOD attended as a precaution to ensure the item was dismantled safely.”

The two men have been released on police bail until May 20.

Chris Ellison, who is the interim director of housing at One YMCA, told the Welwyn Hatfield Times: “We take the safety and wellbeing of all our residents very seriously.

“We continue to work in full support of the police both in the initial and ongoing response, particularly with all our residents.

“As there is a police investigation, it is not appropriate to comment further.”
