13 months after the final defeat of its massively unpopular Hatfield incinerator project, County Hall is struggling to win favour for its preferred alternative plan.

Waste firm Veolia, which has a contract to find a long term disposal solution for Hertfordshire’s rubbish, has outlined its plans for a similar energy from waste plant in Hoddesdon in a presentation to Broxbourne borough councillors.

It intends to make a planning application in October, but the initial reaction was unfavourable.

Council leader Mark Mills-Bishop said: “Before reaching any firm conclusions, we will have to wait until the full details are made available.

“However, based upon what I have seen so far, I have concerns about the sheer size of this building, which I understand would be much taller than the adjacent existing power station, and the volume of lorries which would be delivering rubbish to the site.

“My primary responsibility is to the residents of the borough and I will not support any proposal that is not in their interests.”

The company wants to start building the plant in Ratty’s Lane next year, and make it operational by 2020, but Councillor Mills-Bishop described this as “ambitious”.
