Ellen France, of Hatfield, bought four rats three months ago for her children Lorelei, aged three, Ronnie, five, and Haiden, 11.

The six-month-old rats are called Diamond, who is albino, Gypsy who is Siamese and missing half of her tail, Lulu and Pearl.

Ellen said: “They are the friendliest rats. My kids love them and we all have a rat each.

“They love being cuddled and Diamond always sits on my head. They like licking us and climbing on us.

“My son is autistic and when he’s having a meltdown they often calm him down, he likes to go and feed them and cuddle them.”
