Firefighters were called to a three-storey block of flats in Northfield shortly before 8pm on Friday.

Three crews from Hatfield, WGC and St Albans attended, along with an ambulance from WGC, after reports of a man inside the property.

Despite paramedics attempts to save the man, he died at the scene, and his body was left in situ until Saturday, while firefighters carried out an investigation into the cause of the fire.

Ambulance spokesman Gary Sanderson said: “Sadly on our arrival there was nothing the ambulance and firefighters could do to save the man’s life and he was pronounced dead shortly after.”

A fire and rescue service spokesman said the cause was believed to be accidental.
