The 48-year-old was taken suddenly ill at the wheel of his Land Rover Discovery at around 11.45am on Saturday before veering off the southbound carriageway, near junction 6, and rolling into trees and bushes, the East of England Ambulance Service said.

The man, from Kettering, was being cared for by members of the public when ambulance and fire crews arrived. The East Anglian Air Ambulance was also sent, landing in the carriageway. He was taken to Lister Hospital by land ambulance.

Despite the best efforts of the emergency services, he died shortly after, an EEAS spokesman said.

The man’s wife, aged 48, was also taken to the Lister with minor injuries.

The southbound carriageway was shut for more than two hours from junction 7 southbound, with traffic backing up as far as Biggleswade and causing gridlock in Stevenage and Knebworth.
