A Knebworth woman who was given the all-clear from cervical cancer just two months ago took on a fundraising walk on Saturday – and was the first over the finish line.
Laura Burlingham completed the 5km Steps for Jo’s walk alongside friend Francesca in 50 minutes, a feat which saw the pair finish first.
Although that was a pleasant surprise, Laura’s main focus has been raising funds for Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust – the charity which supported the 37-year-old after she was diagnosed with stage 3 cervical cancer in October 2017.
About the charity walk, she said: “It feels amazing to have completed the Steps for Jo’s 5k step challenge in 50 minutes and be the first walker over the finish line!
“It’s a fantastic event which I have loved taking part in. It’s been such a great atmosphere walking with so many women who have had similar experiences to me and who can relate to what I have been through.
“I’m so pleased that I’ve been able to take part in Steps for Jo’s and to have raised £600. The money raised will help them continue their vital work and be able to support more women like me.
“I will always be grateful to Jo’s for the support they provided throughout my treatment.”
Laura – who underwent gruelling radiotherapy, chemotherapy and brachytherapy, before being given the all-clear two months ago – said she took on the walk at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London in the bid to “give something back”, having used the charity’s helpline and forum during treatment.
It was there she met Francesca, who joined her for the walk – held ahead of Cervical Screening Awareness Week, which started yesterday and runs until Sunday.
