Billy Joe Saunders’ rising stock in boxing shows no sign of let-up after he was named Boxing Writers’ Young Boxer of the Year.

Only days after defeating previously unbeaten prospect John Ryder at the Copper Box Arena to defend his British and Commonwealth titles, the 24-year-old from Hatfield scooped another honour.

And a number of the boxing fraternity have congratulated Saunders on his prestigious award.

Joe Calzaghe, the former WBO, IBF, WBC and WBA Super Middleweight Champion used Twitter last night to show his support for the talented middleweight, saying: “Congrats to @bjsaunders_ on getting the Young Boxer of the Year Award.”

Joe Gallagher, who trains the four Smith brothers, Liam, Callum, Paul and Stephen, as well WBO inter-continental lightweight Anthony Crolla and WBA super-bantamweight champion Scott Quigg Tweeted: “@bjsaunders_ Congratulations on your award Champ.”

Derry Matthews, who KO’d former Sheffield United and Birmingham City footballer Curtis Woodhouse on Saturday in Liverpool to defend his British and Commonwealth lightweight titles, Tweeted: “@bjsaunders_ great award billy won it myself along time ago mate.”

Stablemate Frank Buglioni, himself touted as a future world star, said of Saunders: “One of the most naturally gifted fighters iv seen. Head movement, ring craft and shot selection is world class.

“He has the potential to go all the way! [sic]”

Saunder’s 2008 Beijing Olympics team-mate Khalid Yafai Tweeted: “@bjsaunders_ well done champ.”

And Saunders’ manager, Frank Warren, was understandably delighted with the latest news.

“Billy Joe is a talented boxer, he works hard in the gym and he has really excelled in the last year, producing fantastic results in the ring,” he said.

“I’m really pleased for him that he has won this prestigious award from the boxing writers. He had a great win against Ryder on Saturday night in a tough and compelling fight to defend his British title and I know he is eager to win that outright before going for a European title.”

Saunders will be presented with the award at a star-studded dinner at the Savoy Hotel in London on Monday, October 14.

Saunders was last year named as Welwyn Hatfield Sports Person of the Year.
