Roy Wilsher was presented to Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko at the Japanese Embassy in London, while the couple visited the UK as part of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

They had asked to meet people in the UK during their visit, in order to thank those who helped in the aftermath of the 2011 disaster, which left 20,000 people dead or missing.

Mr Wilsher said: “To be invited to this event is a great honour for me and for Hertfordshire.

“I am extremely proud of the rescue teams and the work we accomplished in helping Japan and its people recover from this disaster. To receive the thanks of the Emperor and Empress on behalf of the country’s people is very touching.”
