A thief who stole two bonsai trees from a specimen plant supplier near Hatfield has been jailed.

Marc Bailie, of Holthwhite Avenue in Enfield, admitted stealing the miniature trees – together worth £1,848, and belonging to Europlants UK in Welham Green - on July 27 last year.

And St Albans magistrates, chaired by Steven Verdon, who deemed the offence a “high-value theft by a persistent offender”, jailed him for eight weeks on Monday.

Bailie, who initially denied the theft before changing his plea, was also ordered to pay £780 in compensation for the bonsai trees.

He also pleaded guilty to going equipped for theft, having been found in Hoddesdon on August 1 with bolt croppers, a siphoning hose, a wrench, gloves, torches and a metal hook.

The magistrates ordered all the equipment to be forfeited and destroyed, and imposed a six-week concurrent jail term.
