You’ve heard the saying ‘You can’t teach an old dog new tricks’, but Hertfordshire fire investigation dog CC is preparing to share everything he knows with a young black Labrador.

Seven-year-old CC has been investigating the causes of fires in Hertfordshire and the surrounding counties since 2007 – and he will now be joined by one-year-old Reqs (pronounced Rex) who is training to be his crime-solving partner.

The two dogs are trained to sniff out accelerants that may be used to start a fire – such as paraffin and petrol – and have been getting to know each other since last Tuesday, October 30.

Nikki Harvey, CC and Reqs’ handler, pictured left with the pair, said: “I’m really looking forward to working with both dogs.

“CC is a pleasure to work with and it will be wonderful to see him take the new dog into his care and pass on all his skills.

“I am hoping they will forge a long lasting friendship.

“CC will work for around another year before he retires from his fire investigation role, by which time Reqs will be ready to take over the mantle.”
