A RECTOR will be descending from the heavens – well, from 74ft up at least – next month as he abseils down a Hatfield church.

The Rev David Munchin will be scaling new heights as he leads a team from his Welwyn parish over the edge of St Ethelreda’s tower for charity.

Around 40 people are expected to head to the Old Hatfield church to raise money for international relief agency, Christian Aid.

The Rev Munchin, who is the rural dean of Welwyn Hatfield, has never abseiled, but told the WHT he was looking forward to the Hertfordshire Sponsored Abseil at the 15th century church.

He said: “I’m not terrible with heights, so hopefully I shouldn’t be too bad with this.

“So far I have raised a few hundred pounds from the very generous support of the churchgoers on a Sunday and hopefully this event will raise a lot for the charity.”

Barbara Spencer, from WGC, is doing the abseil as part of a new year’s resolution to try something new every month during 2012.

The 64-year-old said: “I want to test my sense of adventure and I’m looking forward to having a new experience, while probably worrying my family and friends!”

To take part in the event on Saturday, March 10 click on the link (top right) or call 0207 523 2077.

Registration is £15 per person and participants are asked to raise a minimum of £60 to support the fight to end poverty.

Minimum age is 11.
