Planners have rejected a bid to open a car wash and valeting service outside a Hatfield hotel – saying it would damage the look of the building.

A bid to put up a canopy outside the Ramada Hotel, in St Albans Road West, was also turned down by officials at Welwyn Hatfield Council.

The decision notice published by the council blamed the scale of the proposed work, and said it would damage the appearance of the building, formerly the Comet Hotel.

It said: “Given the scale, height, design and siting of the proposed canopy, the development would appear as a prominent and incongruous addition within the streetscene.

“In addition, the proposal would result in material harm to the setting and visual amenity of the adjacent Grade II listed building.”

The application documents submitted alongside the bid said: “The proposed car wash would predominantly serve the patrons of the hotel, however the car wash service would not cater solely for existing hotel customers.”

“A number of similar arrangements exist at other hotels and other commercial sites in the area.”
