Hatfield Town Council has installed a microphone in its leisure centre to protect staff from abuse, the leader has said.

The CCTV system with cameras and a microphone, that cost £1,275, was installed in the reception area of Birchwood Leisure Centre on June 20, 2017.

It was part tax payer-funded with the rest coming from what the leisure centre earns itself, according to a Hatfield Town Council spokeswoman.

Councillor Lenny Brandon, leader of Hatfield Town Council, told the Welwyn Hatfield Times: “A microphone has been installed above the reception desk in Birchwood Leisure Centre.

“It has been installed because members of staff were receiving abuse.

“It is there to protect the staff and the public.”

Sam Frake, head of operations at the town council, said: “After I ejected two drug-taking males from our toilets I feel safer knowing I have some protection and something to take to the police if ever necessary.

“We also have a lot of children who visit the centre so it is important that our security is high.”
