A man has been fined hundreds of pounds after running a red light and nearly causing a crash with a police car.

John Lee of Holwell Lane, Hatfield, did not appear at Stevenage Magistrates’ Court on August 29 and the case was heard in his absence.

The 40-year-old was found guilty of three offences.

Lee drove a Ford Mondeo on the A414 at Oldings Corner in Hatfield, passing through a red traffic light on February 4.

In doing so, he almost caused a collision with a marked police car.

There was no test certificate in force for his vehicle and not every rear position lamp was in good working order.

Lee was fined £220 was each offence, totalling £660.

He was ordered to pay victim services £30 and £85 court costs.

Three penalty points were also issued.

He must pay the fines and charges, which amount to £775, by September 12 this year.
