The nomination period for the Welwyn Hatfield Sports Awards is running out, so if you know of a local sporting hero who you feel should be recognised for their commitment and success, send in your nomination before the Friday 13 January deadline!

To nominate your Welwyn Hatfield sporting hero, download the form from the council’s website, link at the top right, or pick one up from Times Towers, 31a Howardsgate, WGC.

The awards, now in their fifth year, celebrate the dedication and achievements of local sporting athletes, coaches, teams and school teachers.

The categories in which to nominate are:

• School Team of the Year (sponsor: Welwyn Hatfield Housing Trust)

• School Teacher of the Year (sponsor: Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council)

• School Pupil of the Year (sponsor: Hatfield Town Council)

• Young Leader of the Year (sponsor: Mears/HMT)

• Sports Person of the Year (sponsor: Finesse Leisure)

• Club of the Year (sponsor: WHSPAA)

• Team of the Year (sponsor: Herts Sports Village)

• Coach of the Year (sponsor: Herts Coaches Association)

• Contribution to Disability Sport (sponsor: Activate Forum)

• Service to Sport (sponsor: Welwyn Hatfield Times).

Nominees will be invited to a glittering awards ceremony at the Campus West Theatre, WGC, on Thursday, February 9, where the winners will receive their prizes.

There will also be a guest appearance by a British former Olympic medallist!

The event is organised by Welwyn Hatfield Council in partnership with the WHT and the Welwyn Hatfield Sports and Physical Activity Alliance (WHSPAA).

Councillor Darren Bennett, Welwyn Hatfield sports champion, said: “This exciting annual awards event just keeps getting bigger, but its staging wouldn’t be possible without our residents recognising, through their nominations, the huge pool of sporting talent Welwyn Hatfield has. I’m proud to be championing the nominations for these awards, especially in Olympic year. Don’t forget that there is less than two weeks left to nominate, though!”

If you have any queries about the sports awards, contact the council’s youth and sports partnership team, on: 01707 357174.
