The multi-million pound scheme will see 18km of metallic gas mains replaced with new hard wearing plastic pipes in roads around the Garden City.

Investing over £2.3m, National Grid will also upgrade service pipes to domestic and commercial properties.

This means engineers will need to gain access to some houses to carry out the work, however residents will be contacted in advance to arrange a time and date.

National Grid’s construction operation engineer Kevin Blundell said: “We apologise for any inconvenience and we appreciate the patience and co-operation of residents and road users while this essential work is carried out.”

Work will be carried out by the North London Gas Alliance (a partnership between National Grid and Skanska) and it should be completed by March 2011.

The roads affected are: Homestead Lane, Hyde Valley, Leigh Common, Meadway, Hunters Way, Four Acres, Two Acres, Hollybush Lane, Cole Green Lane, Sandpit Lane, Pinewood, Woodhall Lane, Moss Green, Barnfield Road, Beechfield Road, Furzefield Road, Holwell Road, Broadwater Road, Marley Road, Wheatley Road, Wellcroft Road, Ludwick Road, Salisbury Road, Salisbury Gardens, Shortland Green, Knella Green, Heronswood Road, Knella Road, Poundwell, Linces Way, Black Fan Road, Ridgeway, Little Ganett, Great Ganett, Upperfield Road, Cowper Road, Blackthorn Road, Wellcroft Close, The Green, Homestead Court, Ravenfield Road, Peartree Lane, Hyde Way, Ludwick Way, Essendon Gardens, Haynes Close, Sweet Briar.
